BRAINWORX! (Online Running & Reading Club)

Brainworx! is an interactive and empowering online program where kids can learn and have fun in a safe, online environment! Hosted on Start2Finish’s own brand new technology platform developed with the support of TD Bank, students have easy and secure access to the sessions and materials.

Brainworx! is led 2x/week after school by volunteer Coaches and mentors in virtual pods with 8-10 children from schools across the region. With all of the changes in school schedules and restrictions over the past two years, Brainworx! provides positive screen time in a known space where kids can feel safe, have fun, and grow.

Brainworx! enables children to:

  • Receive mentorship from volunteer “Coaches”

  • Make friends from other schools

  • Interact with their families – Parents/caregivers are given resources and can connect with their child(ren) through the “Word of the Week” and weekly challenges

  • Set fitness and reading goals that are challenging and meaningful

  • Receive motivational “badges” for attendance and completing assignments

  • Have a known, safe space to be themselves and reach their potential

  • Belong to a team

  • Get active!

What are the Brainworx! goals?

  • Identify strengths

  • Acquire capacities (self-awareness, creativity, self/relationship management, decision making, resilience, growth mindset)

  • Develop coping skills and become resilient learners/leaders

  • Build community/belonging

  • Set goals, track progress, and receive positive reinforcement

  • Participate in activities creating predictability/regulation

Does Brainworx! have evidence?

Yes! During the COVID-19 pandemic, we evaluated participants in Brainworx! for self-regulation, psychological distress, physical activity, and self-efficacy. We found that through lock-downs and restrictions, our students stayed steady as a result of their participation in our program. Participants reported engaging in 60 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity regularly as they were engaged in the program.
