THE DAILY 20 Movement Curriculum
The Daily 20 is designed to help schools and students meet the federal/provincial governments' daily physical activity (DPA) guidelines. The easy-to-use, culturally responsive online video program provides 20 minutes of daily physical activity (broken up into 5-minute "doses") to elementary/middle school children in classrooms, gyms, playgrounds and community centres. The program is administered 5 days/week and features a variety of aerobic exercises taught through fun, engaging methods that highlight the importance of physical activity/movement and healthy eating. The Daily 20 measurably improves fitness levels and helps strengthen academic results.
It serves children in grades 1-8 and is being delivered in schools, community centres and homes nationwide. The program is executed in collaboration with our existing partners including school boards, schools within these boards, local community centres and community organizations.
A crucial component is the D20 meets the recommended Daily Physical Activity (DPA) requirement for schools of 20 minutes/day, which our research has indicated is an ongoing challenge for school staff. It provides a solution by offering a pre-packaged, easily implemented, embeddable and adaptable physical activity program.
Why is movement important?
Start2Finish has done extensive research on the importance of movement through our Running & Reading Club afterschool programs and our Brainworx! program. During the pandemic, our students utilized the Daily 20 online 3 times per week under the supervision of coaches. While many studies found that students decreased physical activity or mental health outcomes, our students stayed steady through restrictions and lockdowns. We believe that this is a testament to the importance of consistent movement in the lives of children.
Who is the D20 for?
The D20 is designed for elementary school educators who wish to incorporate movement in their classrooms. The curriculum is designed to be seamless and unintrusive. No special equipment is required to administer the program; all activities can be conducted inside or outside, in a gym, classroom, park or community centre.
What is included in the D20 curriculum?
The Daily 20 activities are designed to be presented in a flexible manner so that each site where the program operates can determine if they want to set aside 20 consecutive minutes, or split the time during intervals (5 or 10 minutes), to complete the D20 by the end of the day. The curriculum includes workout videos featuring teachers and students, interactive learning materials, and a web portal containing a variety of other structured resources available both digitally and paper-based, such as:
Calendar of physical activity ideas
Training Guide Task Cards
Participation tracking charts
Ideas for motivation – How to keep the momentum rolling
Journal templates to bring awareness about physical and mental health
