Katie's Story

THROUGH THE RUNNING & READING CLUB, I HAVE BEEN ABLE TO BUILD MENTORING RELATIONSHIPS WITH SOME OF THE CHILDREN AND IT IS A GREAT FEELING TO SEE THEM GROW IN THEIR READING AND RUNNING SKILLS!

I was looking to serve at a fun organization making a direct influence in the community. Being athletic and loving to read, this was the perfect program for me.

I have been volunteering with the Running & Reading Club at Willow Road School for about two years now, and it has been a life changing dedication for both me and the children involved in the program. You never want to miss a week because the kids will notice and call you out on it!  Through R&R, I have been able to build more personal mentoring relationships with some of the children and it is a great feeling to see them grow in the reading skills and their running abilities over the years. Practicing for the big [5K Running & Reading Challenge] event is such a big motivator for everyone that even I am practicing 5 km runs outside the program because, like the kids, I want to do my best on race day. The children can be so funny and they really bring out the best in me as I try to do the same for them. The other volunteer coaches are really great to work along with and without them this program would never be able to have such an amazing influence in the children's lives that it is having now.
