Getting Back More Than You Give

WHEN VOLUNTEERING WITH THE RUNNING & READING CLUB, YOU GET BACK SO MUCH MORE THAN YOU GIVE.

I volunteered with the Running & Reading Club about 11 years ago at North Kipling Junior Middle School and loved it. I had some knee issues, and then I was transferred to Hamilton, so I lost touch with the Club, but I never forgot the kids and how much I enjoyed working with them.

I became involved in local hockey in Oakville with my daughter and son and spent eight years behind the bench with the Minor Oaks Hockey Association, the Oakville Hornets (House League and Rep) and the Rep Rangers. I loved it and loved working with the players!

With my children are all in university now, I felt I needed to get back into community volunteering. I saw the notice in the Oakville Beaver that Oakwood Public School was looking for volunteer coaches. The rest is history! I asked my good friend and former volunteer hockey coach Frank Gougeon to come out and help too. We worked many years together in the RCMP and know that now more than ever - we need to invest in our youth.

We are blessed at Oakwood to have some truly dedicated and caring coaches and teachers! The safety, well-being, and success of the kids is paramount to all of us. We are equally lucky to have some great kids who are enthusiastic about the program. Our focus is on being part of something bigger than yourself - be it Running & Reading Club, or part of the community.
